NOVICA, in association with National Geographic, works together with talented artisan designers around the world to produce stunning, keepsake treasures. Our mantra is to spread global happiness, so rest assured - we’ll do everything we possibly can to ensure you’re a happy customer. About this item: The customs of Ghana's Dagomba people inspire Sefah Mohammed to craft a stunning replica of the Toka mask. Meaning "ashes," the mask is worn during the Damba festival of happiness. On auspicious occasions, such as when people marry or win in court, powder is sprinkled on them as a sign of victory or great celebration. During the Damba festival, the Toka mask is worn as a symbol of jubilation. Damba is a Dagomba-specific festival that evidences how both Islam and ancient African religions influence who the Dagomba are today. The festival begins with a colorful pageant featuring a big parade toward the center of town, where performers sing songs of praise based on Islamic scripture that are set to traditional African rhythms. About our Artist: 'My work is very unique because I craft African masks of extremely high quality. Moreover, I have innovated some creativity into my art with local available resources, such as calabash and cowries,' says Ghana's Sefah Mohammed. 'There are a lot of factors that motivate me but the significant one is to depict the uniqueness of African history for our younger generations. I have trained a lot of carvers who are still carving and making ends meet for their families.'
